Free Printable Alphabet Scavenger Hunt
All activities should be supervised by an adult. This post contains affiliate links which help support One Simple Party. As always, we only recommend things that we truly love. Full disclosure here.

If you’ve followed this blog for awhile, you will know that scavenger hunts are one of my family’s favorite games. We use them for birthdays, holidays and the kids just tried their first photo hunt. Let’s just say it was a raving success.
So, I’ve been brainstorming some new scavenger hunt ideas. Ones that are easy to implement, make fun party games and can be done inside or out.
My newest creation – an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt. It’s a simple activity that engages kids (and adults) and keeps everyone moving. Plus the best part? Simple download, print and play. No prep needed.
How to Do an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt
Doing an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt is actually pretty easy. The hunt challenges players to find an item for every letter of the alphabet.
For example:
A = Airplane
B = Ball
C = Clock
To play, give each participant an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt. I recommend using a clipboard as a base (we keep a set around for party games) (affiliate). Or players can grab a hard surface to write on. Players will also need a writing implement – pencil, pen, crayon.
Next, players go around the space and find as many things as they can that start with different letters of the alphabet. They can write the word or draw a little picture of what they find.
The person who completes the most letters first or in a designated time limit, wins.
Why Players Love this Scavenger Hunt
There are lots of reasons why guests love to play this scavenger hunt game.
The main one? It can be played anywhere. Inside. Outside. On the playground. In a museum. At the zoo. Even on a road trip.
Instead of sitting around playing games, players are up moving and exploring.
It’s also a great scavenger hunt to take along with you. You can play it at the airport while waiting for your flight. Or you can take it to the museum to help kids enjoy exploring more.
This scavenger hunt also gives players a chance this think creatively. Finding objects that start with different letters of the alphabet can be hard. Players are challenged to think a little outside of the box, which can be super fun.
Where to Do an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt
You can complete an alphabet scavenger hunt anywhere. Inside. Outside. At the campground. On a road trip (there’s even a road trip version included in our Road Trip Games Set).
Depending on the age of players or space limitations, consider limiting the space that you use. For example, maybe you use only a specific room or outdoor space.
Do We Set a Time Limit?
There are two ways that you can play this Alphabet Scavenger Hunt game. With or without a time limit. The one you choose might be determined by how much time you have to play and the players’ ages.
With a Time Limit
You can play with a time limit. Set the time for the amount of time you have for the hunt. The person or team that completes the most letters at the end of the hunt, wins.
No Time Limit
If you have a lot of time or not worried about ticking clocks, you can complete the hunt without a time limit. In this case, the first team that finds an item for each letter, wins.

How to Use It
An alphabet scavenger hunt makes a fantastic game to play with a group. Here are some ideas when to use this scavenger hunt.
Indoor Rainy Day Activity
I am always trying to file away rainy day activities for the kids (such as this indoor scavenger hunt). An Alphabet Scavenger Hunt is a great activity for days you are stuck inside due to weather. Snow days work too.
Let players search throughout their home. Or if playing with younger kids, limit the hunt to one specific room.
Birthday Party Game
If you are hosting a birthday party and need a fun activity that lots of different ages will enjoy, try using this Alphabet Scavenger Hunt. You can even have players work together in teams. Or make the hunt birthday themed – so all of the items found have to be related to a birthday.
Outdoor Nature Hunt
We love doing Nature Scavenger Hunts, but you can also take this Alphabet Scavenger Hunt outdoors. Kids can look for things like:
A = ant
B = bee
C = caterpillar
This version of the hunt encourages players to observe and appreciate the nature around them.
Back to School Activity
As a former teacher, I was always looking for an activity to help kids get to know their classroom. Use this Alphabet Scavenger Hunt as a back to school activity. Let kids work in teams to search the classroom for as many items that start with the different items as they can.
Photo Scavenger Hunt
This type of scavenger hunt has been voted my teens new favorite. There’s something fun about taking photos of different objects.
Send players out with a phone or digital camera. Let them snap photos of an object that starts with each letter. They can check off the letter or write the object found to help reference the photos later on.
Travel Game
Keeping kids entertained on the road can be hard. Take along this Alphabet Scavenger Hunt on a road trip or airplane flight. You can use it from the car or in an airport terminal.
You can also make the hunt travel themed. Instead of just locating any objects that start with the letters, players look for travel themed objects. For example:
A = airplane
B = bus
C = car
This will help keep kids entertained and avoid the “Are We There Yet?” question. We have also included a travel themed version of this Alphabet Scavenger Hunt in our Road Trip Games collection.
Make It Themed
Use this Alphabet Scavenger Hunt during the holidays or for other yearly events. Make it more festive by choosing a theme for the objects.
- Beach Theme – A = anchor, F = float, S = sand
- Halloween Theme – P = pumpkin, G = ghost
- Christmas Theme – W = wreath, P = present, R = reindeer
- Sports Theme – B = basketball, S = scoreboard
Office Party Game
Looking for a unique office party game? Divide players into teams and have them search the office to find an item for each letter. Whichever team finds the most objects within the time limit, wins.
