It’s been like a barnyard over here in our studio for the last few weeks.  Baby M is no longer a baby (or a toddler for that matter).  This year we celebrated his birthday down on the farm with one of his favorite things.  A tractor birthday party.

Since we were hosting the celebration at our local farm, I chose to mix in a cow print pattern to help set the stage for his tractor themed extravaganza.

Cue cow print mason jars.  My biggest discovery is how relaxing painting mason jars is.  Although I don’t think I could make it my full time job, I do see more mason jar crafting in my future.

The best part about painting mason jars is that it’s so easy to transform them into almost anything you want.  And you can use regular paint – not glass paint like I originally thought.  These cow print mason jars would be perfect for a barnyard, tractor or even western themed party.  And if you have another party theme in the works, you can apply the same painting technique to get any look that you would like!

You Will Need:

1. Paint the mason jar white.  You will need to paint 4 to 5 coats of white paint for a solid white layer.

Let completely dry – about 24 hours.

2  With a thin paint brush, outline the cow print pattern on the mason jar.  (Need some cow print inspiration?  Check out Pinterest for lots of cow print pattern ideas to help you paint the splotches.)

Fill in each cow splotch with black paint. You will need to use one to two coats of black paint.

3.  Once the jar is completely dry, spray with an acrylic sealer to protect the paint.  This will help prevent chipping of the paint.

4.  Glue a piece of jute twine to one end of the mouth of the jar using a glue gun.  Wrap the twine around the mouth of the jar.  Glue the end piece at the top of the jar’s mouth.

5.  (Optional)  Attach a party circle or tractor cut out to the jar for added decoration.  I used a little ball of putty at the bottom of the straw to get the centerpiece circle to stand up straight.

You can use your cow print mason jars as decorations, centerpieces or even vessels to hold utensils.  I used mine at our tractor themed party as table centerpieces.  I added tissue paper and a tractor centerpiece circle to the top to tie in with the tractor theme.  It was a fun way to decorate the tables and make them coordinate with the rest of the party.

Happy Celebrating,
