One of the things that I’ve noticed about kids birthday party planning is that we make them much more complicated than they need to be.  Hiring entertainers.  Renting a bounce house.  Inviting a traveling petting zoo.

Generally speaking, these big birthday extravaganzas are really expensive and, more times than not, they fail.  Not exactly because of the activity chosen.  More because of circumstances not in your control.

For example, we hosted an “amazing” tractor themed birthday party at a local farm for Little Man’s 3rd birthday.  I envisioned a guided farm tour with preschoolers cooing over all of the adorable goats and riding their own tractors in the tractor playground.  

Then, reality happened.  There was a monsoon rainstorm.  We ended up confined to the party room due to the flooding.  With 20 three-year-olds.  Super fun.

Thank goodness for coloring.  If I hadn’t pulled together a last-minute coloring station, I’m not sure we would have survived those two hours.
