Free Printable Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Winter is upon us or so I think after this crazy week of cold weather. And with winter comes lots of time inside. Together.
So, if it’s time to get off the screens in your house and shake things up a bit, grab this Free Printable Indoor Scavenger Hunt.
We love scavenger hunts around here. They’ve become a tradition. The kids love hunting for clues for any holiday. We complete nature ones on hikes. And even sometimes do them on birthdays.
So, I figured it was time to create one for indoor time. Especially when it’s just a bit too cold to spend too much time outside.
How It Works
Unlike some of our treasure hunt lists, this indoor scavenger hunt has clue cards instead. Each card measures about 4 inches by 3 inches and features a rhyming riddle.
Each clue’s riddle leads to a specific place in the house. The spots include:
- shoe closet
- dryer
- speaker
- clock
- stairs
- lamp
- bed
- dresser
- freezer
- thermostat
- seat at the table
There are ten unique destinations and one final clue.
To set up, place the clues in the correct locations. You can adjust them in any order you prefer. Just make sure that final clue is at your child’s seat or the dining table.
When Can I Use This?
Scavenger hunts are fun to do any time. They are easy to set up and a quick activity to throw together for kids. Since it’s an indoor hunt – meaning that all of the clue locations are located indoors – it’s perfect for rainy, snowy, and cold/windy days. Or even super hot days when it’s too humid to venture outside.
You can also incorporate this scavenger hunt as a fun indoor party game idea. Depending on the size of your party, you may want to divide the kids into different groups and have them hunt separately.
This particular hunt was created for ages 6 – 12. Since the clues are rhyming ones, reading skills are essential.
What if my kids can’t read yet? Honestly, no worries. If one person in the group can read, you can make him or her the designated reader. Or do the scavenger hunt with the kids and read them the clues.
Do I Need a Prize?
No. Since you might be doing this indoor scavenger hunt on the fly, a prize isn’t necessary. When my kids were little though, I did keep a box of simple and fun prizes around. That way I could gather together a “treasure” easily. (affiliates)
Some ideal prizes might include:
- play dough
- stickers
- slime
- candy bars
- key chains
- shrinking art craft kit
- Slinky
- mega bouncy ball
The positive thing about having a treasure at the end of the hunt is that it gives your kids another activity. Which, if the weather is awful, can be a win.
