Any ideas about what I did this week?  I made hotel reservations for my parents’ Thanksgiving visit.  Which means that Thanksgiving is only weeks away because I really don’t plan that far in advance.

And as I dream about freshly baked pumpkin pies and warm homemade applesauce, I can only think about how I want to dress the table for this year’s feast.

Sadly, we are years away from the Thanksgiving kids table era.  These days, everyone gathers together at our main dining table.  And usually I decorate the table in between cooking the different Thanksgiving courses.  While trying to catch glimpses of the Thanksgiving Day parade of course.

To keep things simple, I like using these Free Printable Thanksgiving Paper Napkin Rings.  They wrap neatly around your napkin and utensils, giving a decorative touch to any place setting.

Each napkin ring features a classic black and white buffalo check design, watercolor pumpkins and “Happy Thanksgiving” in modern script.  It’s an easy way to keep your napkin and utensils all in one place.

How to Make Napkin Rings

I started making napkin rings for my events many years ago.  They are an easy way to dress up a table and helpful when you are serving a large number of guests.

To make your own napkin rings, start by downloading your design (download these Free Printable Thanksgiving Napkin Rings here).

Print the napkin rings on bright white copy paper. (affiliate)  DO NOT use cardstock for this design.  It is too hard to wrap the napkin and you end up with noticeable creases in the wrap.

The napkin rings are designed as long strips.  There are three napkin rings on each 8.5″ x 11″ page.  Use a paper trimmer or scissors to cut out each napkin ring. (affiliate)

Once you have the rings, wrap up your napkin and utensils.  There are two ways that you can do this.  For a table setting, you can fold the napkin in a rectangle, place the utensils on top and then wrap the entire thing with the napkin ring.

If you are using your Thanksgiving napkin rings for a buffet style affair – where they are placed in a basket and guests grab their own – you will need the utensils to be more secure.  Place the utensils in the napkin, roll the napkin up and wrap the entire thing with the napkin ring.

No matter which way you choose, attach the edge of your napkin ring to the other side using a Glue Dot or double sided tape.  (affiliate)

Favorite Thanksgiving Napkins

Over the years, I’ve used an assortment of paper and cloth napkins at our Thanksgiving feast.  My favorite napkins are decorative paper ones with more formal designs like this one. (affiliate)  The long rectangular shape makes them easy to add utensils and a napkin ring to.

I also sometimes use cloth napkins in our guest count is lower.  These are easy to throw in the wash after the feast and less wasteful.  When choosing cloth napkins, remember that it’s an investment.  They are not one time use.  You will use them for multiple events.

Select cloth napkins that are on the softer side and have neutral colors.  I love beiges and light plaids.  You could choose white if you want to bleach them afterwards, but I’ve found that doesn’t always get out all of the stains.  A neutral pattern tends to hide stains better. (affiliate)
