Free Printable Winter This or That Game

Although there isn’t much that I love about the winter months, I try to focus on the warm and cozy evenings at home. This stretch of darker months lays the perfect backdrop for gatherings around the fireplace playing games together. The ones that stir delightful conversations and have the potential for lots of giggling.
But we are always looking for easy games to play together. Ones that don’t take a lot of prep and I can put together in a few minutes.
So that’s why I created this Winter This or That Game. It’s the perfect game for a winter party, family game night or even as a classroom brain break on an indoor recess day.
How to Play Winter This or That
This Winter This or That Game is easy to play. Each game has a list of two winter options. Players choose the option that best represents their likes.
For example, would you choose sledding or a snowball fight? Or skiing or snowboarding? Figure skating or ice hockey?
Players work through the list of choices circling their best choice. At the end, you can share out the results as a group.
The best part? There are no wrong answers or a winner in this party game. It’s just a great way to spark conversation, laughter and fun on a cold winter night.
And kids and adults love sharing their opinions. This game is a great way to let everyone talk about their winter likes and dislikes. Without any judgement.
How to Make your Winter This or That
First, download the Free Printable Winter This or That game here. It is formatted for 8.5″ x 11″ size for easy printing on regular white copy paper.
Then, print as many copies as you need for the players. You can print at home or send to a local printer. Also, it’s always wise to have a couple extra copies in case players want to play twice.
That’s it. You’re ready to go on party day. Make sure you have some pencils ready for guests to play with. I love to use themed pencils and these winter snowflake ones would be fun. (affiliate)
When to Use this Party Game
We will be enjoying this party game at our upcoming winter game night. But it works in lots of different settings.
Use it as a whole group ice breaker to get to know each other better. Or as a fun morning meeting activity. You can also let kids play during indoor recess. Especially on a cold, snowy day.
It’s also great for family game nights, winter birthday parties (teens love this game) or at home snow day fun. Use as a party opener, a quick activity in between snacks, before having cake or while waiting for parents to pick up their kids.
If using during a family game night, you can use it as a transition activity between games.
Also, you don’t have to read all of the questions all at once. Sometimes a This or That game works best when it’s broken into smaller chunks.
You can even put an educational twist on it and have players defend their answers. Why is snowboarding better then skiing? And then list their reasons why.
Game Extension Ideas
There are lots of ways to go beyond just the traditional Winter This or That Game. Here are a couple ideas that your guests (or students) may enjoy.
Side to Side Voting
Instead of circling the answer, have guests vote physically. Designate one side of the room as “This” and the other side as “That”. Read each question out loud and guests go to the side of the room that represents their response.
Dance It Out
Guests invent a dance or movement that represents their choice. For example, if they choose “hot cocoa” over “hot tea”, they will do a “hot cocoa” dance. Maybe they do a marshmallow wiggle or the hot cocoa slide. The movement doesn’t need to be guessed by others, just representative of the phrase.
Snowball Toss
Toss a fake snowball to the guest who is going to start the sharing. Once they share, they toss the snowball to the next person. The tossing continues until everyone had a chance to share their response. (affiliate)
Find Your Twin
Read out the response choices for the question. Players find someone who has the same response they do.
Pose Freeze
Read the question aloud. Players call out their choice and then strike a pose representing it.
Take a Poll
Players respond with their answer. Party host announces the winning response at the end of each round. The player with the most number of popular responses at the end of play, wins.
Rapid Fire Round
The party host reads out the this or that question. Players rapid respond with the first answer that comes to mind. This is also a great way to mix with the side-to-side version of this game.
Defenders
Players don’t just answer the question, they have to defend their response. Each player has to give a reason for their choice out loud when they share their response.
