One thing that makes Fourth of July perfect is an evening watching fireworks.  Usually we need to arrive at least an hour early to get a decent seat for viewing.  We layout the picnic blanket, unpack the snack foods and then it starts.

The question – What do we do now?

Although many Fourth of July fireworks shows have music and lots of kids bouncing around, I find it’s always good to have an activity planned.  One that they can complete together and wander with.

So, I created this Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt.  It’s a list of Fourth of July items you’re bound to see at a fireworks show, Fourth of July barbeque or even a parade.  Perfect for those moments when everyone is waiting for the action to start.

Fourth of July Scavenger List Items

When creating this Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt, I brainstormed things that we’ve spotted during our many fireworks shows.  These things can really be found any where on Fourth of July, though.  A parade.  In town.  At a barbeque.

The items to find are:

  • An American flag
  • fireworks in the sky
  • ice pop
  • patriotic banner
  • sunglasses
  • red, white and blue dessert
  • piece of candy
  • beach ball
  • hot dog
  • American eagle
  • balloons
  • something red
  • flip flops
  • watermelon
  • patriotic hat
  • pinwheel
  • ice cream
  • something blue
  • grill
  • Fourth of July decor

How to Make your Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt

This Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt comes in two sizes – 5″ x 7″ cards and 8.5″ x 11″ letter sized page.  You can download the designs below.

To make your Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt, print on medium white cardstock or white copy paper.  If making the cards, you can use a paper trimmer for easy cutting.  (affiliates)

After you’ve made your scavenger hunts, they are ready to use.  You can attach to a clipboard for an easy on the go surface and make sure everyone has a pencil or pen.  These patriotic pens would be a super fun addition.

Ways to Play

There are lots of fun ways to play this Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt.  Here are a few fun ideas to get you started.

Race Against the Clock

Give all of the players 10 to 15 minutes to find as many items on the hunt as possible.  The player who finds the most items in that amount of time, wins.

Team Competition

Instead of completing the hunt solo, divide players into teams.  The first team to complete the hunt, wins.

Neighborhood Walk

This is a great way to play with littles.  It reminds me of our Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt.  Use this Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt for a walk around the neighborhood or even your town.  Minus the fireworks in the sky, you should be able to find most of the items on the list.  For fireworks, instead of the real thing, you can replace it with an picture of fireworks.

Use Photos

Now that the kids are older, we love transforming traditional scavenger hunts into photo scavenger hunts.  We did this at Easter this year and it was a lot of fun.  Instead of just finding the items on this Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt, have the tweens and teens take photos of the items.  To complete the hunt, they need to showcase their patriotic photos as well as the completed hunt sheet.

Bingo Style

Instead of finding ALL of the items in the scavenger hunt, see if players can complete a row, column or diagonal.

Add Some Glow

Transform this Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt into a fun summer evening activity. Give players patriotic glow sticks and flashlights before play begins. (affiliates)  Then, see how many items they can find during dusk.  This can add a fun challenge for older players.

Patriotic Prizes

As I always say, you do not need prizes to make your scavenger hunt a success.  But… some patriotic prizes for your Fourth of July games can be added motivation and fun.  Check out these fun patriotic prize ideas for your Fourth of July scavenger hunt.

Mini Bubble Wands – These are just plain cute.

Flag Sunglasses – Super stylish to wear after the scavenger hunt.

Patriotic Rubber Ducks – These are also just plain cute.

Fiber Optic Wands – Perfect for nighttime fun.

Handmade Patriotic Bracelets

Patriotic Stuffed Buddy – It will be hard to choose between this bald eagle, highland cow or Americana Palm Pal
